Successful ex-student returns to the College

There aren’t many people who can claim to have studied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at university, but for former CTK student Yasmin Taylor it was the right course for her.

“I get people saying ‘that’s really cool’ all the time, especially because I’m a girl. There were only nine people on the course and only two girls,” Yasmin told us.

Having graduated last year, Yasmin has found success quickly and recently returned to CTK to share some of her experience and advice with our students.

After graduation she was initially working as a business productivity advisor at Microsoft. It wasn’t exactly building robots, but it was a role that utilised her computer skills and set her on the path to success.

Of course, Yasmin excelled in the role and was promoted to Peer Leader before she left Microsoft for a new challenge elsewhere.

“I was approached by someone regarding a new role, so currently I’m an IT and Operations Assistant for an investment and finance recruitment company in Bank,” she said.

“I basically oversee and manage the IT infrastructure for offices in Singapore, New York, Hong Kong and London. I really like it and there’s a lot of responsibility.”

Yasmin’s passion for IT, plus her obvious talent, has already taken her a long way – despite only finishing university less than a year ago. But she’s not done there.

“I want to stay within the same company for the foreseeable future because I am my own manager here. But I would like to go down the IT manager route or become Head of Operations one day. In five years’ time I’d like to be an IT Manager for a finance company because I really enjoy finance,” she said.

Having already achieved so much since completing her A-Levels at Christ the King, Yasmin felt she would be able to give something back to her former college and help our current students make decisions about their future.

So, when we invited her to come in and give a talk on her experience since leaving Christ the King, she jumped at the chance.

“It was really nice to be invited to speak and I’d love to come back to do more talks in the future. So please keep inviting me! It’s a good opportunity to network,” she said.

“One of the things I advised current students to do in my talk was to start some extracurricular activities that show leadership. For example when I was here I was student president.”

Given her early career success, we’re sure our students will follow Yasmin’s advice carefully. So don’t worry Yasmin, you’ll definitely be invited back!
