Celebrating Marlene Hilda Burt’s Honour in the New Year Honours List
The New Year Honours list celebrates the exceptional service and achievements of people across the UK. We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Marlene Hilda Burt, former Governor at Christ the King, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her outstanding contributions to Further Education.
Reflecting on the award, Marlene shared: “It was such a thrill—and a great surprise—to receive the letter from the Cabinet Office at the beginning of December, informing me that I had been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Further Education. It was then so difficult having to keep it totally secret till the end of the month! But I managed to restrain myself until the list of names was officially published.
Being a Governor at Christ the King Sixth Forms for 16 years was a pleasure, and it was a privilege to be part of such an amazing and vibrant College. So it was humbling, and I was ‘tickled pink’ to be awarded the BEM for my work there as Governor, being part of the family of CTK.
It was lovely to see, amongst others on the list, the names of two people I know. Firstly, the actress Carey Mulligan, who is receiving the CBE. Carey was a boarder at the school where I taught, and I was her Housemistress. Then, also a friend who, like me, is a member of the Vincentian charity AIC. She is being awarded the MBE for her work with disabled people.”
We are so proud of Marlene’s accomplishment and everything she has done for our CTK family. Her dedication and service are truly inspiring.
