Upper Sixth Student charity single raises almost £1000 for You Touch Africa and achieves international success

Trevor Gomes, an Upper Sixth student at Christ the King: St Mary’s, recently joined with the college band to produce a powerful charity single for You Touch Africa. The track, which is titled ‘So Let Our Light Shine,’ is now available for global purchase on over 100 music download sites including i-Tunes, Google Play Store, Amazon, X-Box Music, and E-Music, and is also sold on CD Platform at request. All profits are channelled directly to You Touch Africa, which coordinates a series of local community projects across the continent. The charity is entirely run by volunteers and works in close corporation with an experienced missionary from Africa in order to forge lasting links with African populations. The idea for the charity single first emerged in September of last year. A talented pianist and trumpet player, Trevor was keen to share his love of music with his peers, and to raise awareness of the fantastic initiatives that You Touch Africa organise in African towns and villages. Having attended a music school for eight years, he used his knowledge to create a Christ the King College band, and organised an audition session at St Mary’s for prospective band members. After the audition process was complete, Trevor selected 9 members and the band began their rehearsals for a series of performances at the College open days and the Christmas Talent Show.Motivated by the enthusiastic student response to the charity single, Trevor proceeded to contact record labels and online music distributors, and organised separate recordings for each band member. The support that he received during this period was invaluable, with Music technician Mr French providing editorial guidance on the piece and fellow A2 student Szymon Mlynarz designing the CD cover and band logos. Miss Hogan, Mr Hirst and Mr Kurtyanek (drums) also provided vital assistance during this busy time.

The track was released worldwide on the 27th March, 2015, and was performed at the Easter Community Day. Since its initial release, Trevor has sold over 300 CDs at local churches, including the parish of the Fr. Arbo (Chairman of You Touch Africa). He is also promoting the track on his social media pages, and on a web page that has been specifically set up for the band. Tinie Tempah (2x UK No.1 and 2x Brit Award Winner) and ‘Gabz’ (Britain’s Got Talent Finalist) have provided encouragement and support for the band on twitter and instagram.

In such a short time, and whilst studying for his A Level examinations, Trevor has already raised almost £1000. You can preview the track on Spotify and You Tube. Please support him by purchasing online, links below:
