CTK Students Visit Oxford University, Inspiring Future Aspirations

On Tuesday, 22nd October 2024, a group of 12 CTK St Mary’s students in their final year of sixth form, accompanied by 18 Year 11 students from St Columba’s—whom they had mentored the previous year—embarked on an inspiring visit to Oxford University’s Mansfield College.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by Sarah, the event organiser and host, who ensured the day ran smoothly. The students had the opportunity to experience Oxford’s renowned lecture theatres and received valuable information about which A-Level subjects lead to various university degrees. The group also participated in a detailed session on the university application process and available financial support, providing them with crucial insight as they prepare for their next steps in higher education.

A highlight of the day was the engaging Q&A session with three current Oxford students—Abdi, Denise, and Marion—who are studying PPE, Mathematics, and English, respectively. These outstanding students, each boasting an impressive record of 9 A*/A grades at A-Level, shared their personal journeys, challenges, and successes at Oxford. The thoughtful questions posed by our students demonstrated their keen interest and ambitions, and the insights from the Oxford trio left a lasting impact.

In the afternoon, the group was treated to a delicious lunch of Moroccan Chops or Steamed Salmon, during which they were joined by Tony, an alumnus of both St Columba’s and CTK, and Kasier, a former St Columba’s student. The informal networking session provided an inspiring close to the day, as Tony and Kasier mingled with the students, sharing their experiences and encouraging them to aim high in their own academic journeys.

The visit to Oxford University was an enriching experience, sparking new aspirations and motivating our students to consider the exciting possibilities that await them in higher education. The collaboration between CTK and St Columba’s, especially through mentorship, continues to strengthen ties and create lasting opportunities for both current and former students.

Mr Agyemang, Assistant Principal at CTK St Mary’s who accompanied the students on the trip, said: “Visiting Oxford University was an inspiring experience for our students, giving them a real sense of what’s possible in higher education. Hearing from current Oxford students and alumni, they left motivated and excited about their future academic journeys.”

This trip exemplifies CTK’s commitment to broadening students’ horizons and fostering their academic and personal growth.
