Yvonne Igunma: Former student qualifies as a Doctor

Yvonne is a qualified doctor and a former student of Christ the King Sixth Form College. She studied A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, History and Art with us before being accepted to study her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at St. George’s, University of London and her BSc in Human Genetics at King’s College London.

“I never knew what I wanted do when I started college as I had so many different interests, “ said Yvonne. “But whilst sitting in Chemistry in AS level we were asked if we wanted to study medicine at university, and were presented with the opportunity to join the Access to Medicine scheme at Kings College University.

I raised my hand and started to entertain the possibility. I got into the programme and realised that this was something that combined all my interests and challenged me academically. From then I knew it was something I wanted to do.”

Yvonne says that her time at Christ the King Sixth Form College “definitely” helped her get where she is today.

“I met people who propelled me to do greater things, was presented with opportunities to develop and obviously was taught well in relevant topics for my studies,” she said. “It meant that university wasn’t a shock to the system in terms of independent learning. Doing art also helped me express my creative side and develop this further.

Sarah also met with challenges along the way. “Having to re-sit an exam at university was a big challenge,” she said. “I had to build myself up to do it again.

“I have now completed my university degree and am in the final few months of completing my qualification as a General Practitioner,” said Yvonne. “I am a Primary Care Doctor and on the front line of the NHS, seeing patients daily.”

Yvonne’s proudest moment so far is passing her final exams, and she also has a business on the side, a fashion venture called Sarah Eve Creations.

“I now plan to obtain an additional qualification as a hospital practitioner which will make me more specialist,” she said. “I want to be a specialist GP working part-time in hospital and also having a family. I will also have several businesses,  including my fashion one.”

Yvonne had some final words of advice to share with others hoping to take a similar career path.

“Work hard and ask questions,” she said. “There are people willing to help you. Believe in yourself, even if no one else does. It’s hard, but not impossible.”
