Ana Fernandes: Sociology student wants to use her knowledge to work with children

“I feel that studying at Christ the King Sixth Form College has allowed me to feel more confident in myself,” said Ana Fernandes.

Our former student recently spoke to our Alumni Team about her experiences studying at college, university and beyond.

Ana attended Catford High School before coming to Christ the King to take her A Levels in Sociology and Science.

“My fondest memory of Christ the King is how helpful and friendly both the staff and students were,” said Ana. “I also feel my time there has influenced how I developed personally and academically, preparing me for life at university. I took away both life and academic skills such as being organised, punctual, and confident.”

Ana gained a place at the University of Bedfordshire to study for her BA (Hons) in Criminology and Sociology, where she learned about Social Theory, Research Techniques, Crime and Deviance, Social Issues and Welfare and Education, among other things. She graduated in July 2015.

“I have a passion for working with children and young people,” she said. The knowledge Ana gained during her time at Christ the King studying Sociology, and her degree, gives her a firm understanding of social and economic factors such as poverty, peer-pressure, bullying and estrangement from parents that may affect the lives of the young people she wants to care for.

“I have plans to start a career in teaching in the near future,” said Ana. “But at the moment I am a stay at home mum to two children; and also a wife. In a few years’ time, I want to start my own business and open and run my own nursery.”
