Success of Teacher Apprentices at CTK through the Borromeo Hub
Journey to QTS
At Christ the King Sixth Forms (CTK), the Borromeo Hub continues to provide a thriving platform for aspiring teachers, enabling them to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through a well-supported and structured apprenticeship program. This innovative teacher training model combines in-school experience with tailored professional development, resulting in highly successful outcomes for our trainees.
CTK offers a home school placement for trainees four days a week, where they immerse themselves in the practical aspects of teaching. The fifth day is dedicated to General Professional Studies and subject-specific training. This combination ensures that apprentices receive comprehensive, hands-on experience while deepening their theoretical knowledge. Shi-Kara, one of our outstanding apprentices, reflected, “I really enjoyed attending training on Fridays and being able to ask questions when needed. Additionally, I liked that I was able to speak with other people on the course, where we could share best practices or just talk about challenges we faced in our week.”
CTK’s commitment to developing future educators is reflected in the robust support system provided for each trainee. Expert in-school mentors hold weekly meetings with trainees, guided by the XTSE curriculum. These sessions, along with fortnightly observations, are designed to provide constructive feedback and set SMART targets, ensuring the apprentices are continuously improving. Trainee Shi-Kara noted, “My highlight of the whole process was having my weekly mentor meetings because it was a time where I felt I could just relax, ask any questions I needed, but also just have a laugh because I had a great mentor.”

The success of the program is demonstrated by the incredible progress our trainees make. Shi-Kara, in particular, has risen to every challenge presented to her and has grown into an exceptional teacher. Her mentor highlighted, “Shi-Kara has shown significant progress over the year and has risen to every challenge. She has worked so hard and has listened to and acted on all the feedback, which has made her into an outstanding teacher. Shi-Kara excels in building positive, trusting relationships with pupils based on mutual respect, ensuring pupil voice is heard and listened to.”
This personal and professional growth, achieved through consistent support and reflective practices, is further amplified by the fact that CTK covers all training costs and provides a salary for its apprentices. This financial backing ensures that trainees can focus on their development without the burden of educational expenses.
Shi-Kara added, “I wanted to apply for teacher training through the Borromeo Hub because it allowed me to gain QTS, which is amazing. I also liked how they undertake their assessment process, such as weekly reflections and having one assessment per term—this actually gives you the chance to not feel too overwhelmed.”
Despite the challenges that come with managing a busy teaching timetable, marking, and training, the Borromeo Hub equips trainees with the resilience and determination needed to succeed. Shi-Kara shared her top tips for prospective applicants: “Never give up, no matter how challenging the whole process is, and remember to breathe—you’re not alone. Stay on top of all your assessments and ask as many questions as you need—there is no such thing as a silly question.”
CTK is incredibly proud of the success of its teacher apprentices, and Shi-Kara is a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication and support. We are delighted that she has chosen to stay on and teach with us. Her ability to foster happy, motivated learners who are confident in challenging themselves has made her a valued member of the teaching staff.
